News update from Dave Vizard – August / September 2005:

Events

The first two weeks of September will involve me running courses in London, Halifax, Bath, Newcastle, Kettering, Swindon, Cirencester, Barnstaple and Derby. The Summer period has seen a whole range of reports and news items related to behaviour and learning matters.

LATEST NEWS ON BEHAVIOUR AND LEARNING RELATED MATTERS

Pupils Return From Lunch Ready To Learn

Greenwich Schools who have adopted Jamie Oliver's Healthy School Meals have reported that students are returning after lunch ready to learn. There are fewer incidents of bad behaviour, particularly amongst the previously most poorly behaved. It has also been found that concentration has improved.

Food Community Facilitators Are Making A Difference

Groups of teenagers are being taken on tours of supermarkets to help them shop wisely and to select healthy products. Karen Scott, a Food Community Facilitator in Staffordshire, has helped teenagers to translate labels on food products to enable them to make informed decisions about buying healthy foods on a budget. The group were also steered towards fruit and vegetables counters and away from crisps, cakes and sweets. They were also taught to be wary of special offers to entice them to purchase unhealthy products.

Badly Behaving Girls

The Inclusive and Supportive Education Congress Meeting in Glasgow recently reported on research conducted by Edinburgh University which said that girls are just as badly behaved at school as boys, yet were less likely to be punished. Boys were more liable to be disciplined for their behaviour and four times more likely to be expelled.

Teen Alcohol Abuse on The Rise

Binge drinking amongst teens is on the increase. Government figures revealed that in the under-18 category, 31 343 were prosecuted for drunk and disorderly behaviour in 2003, and increase of 2% on 2002. There is a concern that binge drinking leads to alcohol related violence.

All Fingers and Thumbs - Texting Can Damage Your Digits

Constant texting using only one digit can cause a repetitive strain injury which can cause swelling in the tendons and a possible long term injury, according to the Association of Chartered Physiotherapists in Occupational Health and Ergonomics.

The thumb is not a very dextrous digit. The problem is being exacerbated by mobile phones getting smaller with buttons closer together. No one should spend more than 5-10 minutes at a time texting. You should also try to use your fingers as well as your thumbs when creating a text message.

Classic Dispersal

Crowds of rowdy under-age drinkers have been causing problems on the seafront in Worthing. The police, to counter this problem, have developed a simple but effective solution - classical music. Through the playing classical music through loudspeakers, the police were able to dispense the under-age drinkers. Scientific studies have shown that young people will move away from music they deem unfashionable as music is a matter of young people's identity. The name of the police operation of course was 'Operation Brahms and List!'
